VI. Sudden Impact or Single-Event Injuries

As indicated by the name, these injuries are the sudden and accidental occurrences to be found in any sport, and include broken bones, lacerations, severe sprains, strains, bruises, and concussions. A twisting turn or fall may be the source of injury, but sudden injuries often occur as a result of hard contact with other athletes. The football player who gets tackled and tears the cartilage in his knee has suffered a single-event injury. As Dr. Speer points out, “Most injuries in this category are part of the sport and, in many cases, you can’t prevent them.” If protective gear is available, be sure your athlete properly uses such equipment.
